Frankie Yankovic
Frankie Yankovic, universally known as King of the Polka, was born in West Virginia in 1915, the son of Slovenian immigrants. Inspired to take up the accordion as a teen, his dance band became hugely popular among mid-western Central European immigrants in the 1930s, crossing over to the pop charts with 1948's "Just Because." Until his 1998 death, Frankie Yankovic continued to be a polka superstar. Contrary to popular belief, he is not related to accordion-playing musical parodist Weird Al Yankovic, who claims that his parents induced him to take accordion lessons due to their shared surname.
