Harold Budd
Harold Budd was exploring the parameters of minimalism long before his collaborations with Brian Eno raised the profile of "ambient" music in the late 1970s. As early as 1962 he was making a name for himself with his long-form compositions, which he based on exotic scales and sometimes unusual instrumentation, with an emphasis on mood, texture, and tone rather than melody and rhythm. His solo recordings on Eno's label in the mid-'70s led to their historic partnership on two groundbreaking albums, as well as fruitful collaborations with the Cocteau Twins, Daniel Lentz, and others. He continued to compose into the new millennium.
Mark Isham
Trained as a classical musician, Mark Isham began his professional career in the 1970s as a jazz and pop sideman and studio musician (trumpet and synth) for such notable acts as the Beach Boys and Joni Mitchell. He hovered for a while in two bands, Art Lande's Rubisa Patrol and his own Group 87, an instrumental supergroup featuring drummer Terry Bozzio and keyboardist Patrick O'Hearn, both of Frank Zappa's band. By the '80s, Isham found his definitive path as both a solo artist and a film composer. His Windham Hill releases are reflective and melodic, residing at a crossroads where New Age, ambient, and jazz meet. Similarly, his film scores--which have garnered several Academy Award and Golden Globes nominations--are recognized for their compositional power and intelligent orchestrations.
