After years of refusing reunion tours and denouncing them as artless cash grabs, original Jane's Addiction bassist and co-founder Eric Avery released HELP WANTED, his 2008 solo debut. Not surprisingly, Avery is no sell-out and these 12 tracks are sonically challenging takes on isolation, drug abuse, aging, and alienation. Foregoing his former band's arena bombast, Avery carves melodies out of layers of digitalia and moody riffs. With a baritone that at times sounds like vintage Iggy Pop and arrangements that recall both Garbage--whose Shirley Manson guests here--and Portishead, Avery has delivered a minor masterpiece of alternative pop noir.
