While the 2000 edition of this classic Johnny Cash performance, AT SAN QUENTIN (THE COMPLETE 1969 CONCERT), led listeners to believe that it presented the show in its entirety, this comprehensive two-CD/one-DVD reissue set proves that notion to be not quite true. Boasting a total of 31 tracks, the audio discs feature all of the songs from SAN QUENTIN's previous incarnations, most notably the country icon's definitive reading of the witty Shel Silverstein tune "A Boy Named Sue," but it also makes room for additional Cash numbers, including the fierce "Blistered," and tunes by other members of Cash's traveling show, such as Carl Perkins (a rollicking version of his own "Blue Suede Shoes") and the Statler Brothers (the upbeat "Flowers on the Wall"). The DVD documentary focuses on both Cash and his venue of choice, making this version of SAN QUENTIN ideal for aficionados of the Man in Black.
Tracklist
Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was part rockabilly rebel, part campfire storyteller, part outlaw in black. Cash made country and rockabilly history on the Sun label in the 1950s. During the '60s, the ruggedly charismatic Cash rose to superstardom, ending the decade with both his marriage to June Carter and his own television show. In the '90s, Cash began his highly successful and acclaimed AMERICAN RECORDINGS series, reaching a new audience with an amazingly diverse set of songs, ranging from traditional tunes to alternative rock covers. With his lean, angular sound and hearty, passionate baritone, Cash forged one of the most unique styles in all of popular music, one that delved into gospel, folk, and rock, but also remained the essence of country music. Four months after his wife died, Johnny Cash passed away on September 12, 2003. And in 2005, the Oscar-nominated biopic WALK THE LINE brought Cash's music and legend to his largest audience yet.
Carl Perkins
Rockabilly pioneer Carl Perkins emerged in the 1950s around the same time as Elvis Presley, with a similar blend of country and R&B. He was denied Elvis-level fame due to poor timing, bad breaks, and a relative lack of the sex appeal that aided Presley's career. Nevertheless, Perkins was one of rock & roll's first great auteurs, and his early work was a crucial element of the rockabilly template. His songs were covered by everyone from the Beatles to the King himself, and when he died in 1998 he was eulogized as a giant of rock & roll.
