Although they've touched upon several different styles during their long and winding career (blues, extended jams, hard rock, etc.), Hot Tuna began life as an acoustic band, and the style remained the band's musical core throughout the years. During a tour of Japan in 1997, the band booked a surprise gig at a miniscule club named Stove's (maximum capacity 50), and when it became apparent that overcrowding and a tiny stage wouldn't allow the group to plug in and do a full-on electric set, Jorma Kaukonen and company picked up their acoustic instruments and did an impromptu "unplugged" set. 1998's 14-track long LIVE IN JAPAN included many highlights from this special night, including surprisingly uptempo versions of "Hesitation Blues," "Let Us Get Together," and "Keep on Truckin'."
Tracklist
Hot Tuna
Hot Tuna began in 1970 as a side project of Jefferson Airplane members Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, who wanted to put aside psychedelia to explore their blues roots. Their format has frequently changed over the years (shifting back and forth from acoustic to electric), as has their personnel (the version of the band featuring fiddler Papa John Creach is beloved to fans), but their blues-rock sound remains consistent.
