Seattle native and renowned hip-hop producer Jake One has built a rep in the rap industry providing tight beats for a wide range of artists both underground (3rd Degree, Encore, Boom Bap Project, Vast Aire, Rasco, Arcee) and commercial (Nas, 50 Cent, G-Unit, E-40) since the mid-1990s. His debut album, WHITE VAN MUSIC, sees Jake laying down tracks for an extraordinarily eclectic band of lyricists. Every track bangs while a few diverse match-ups (Brother Ali and Freeway, Bishop Lamont and Busta Rhymes) are especially rewarding. M.O.P., Young Buck, Little Brother, Evidence, Prodigy, Keak da Sneak, MF Doom, and Posdanous of De La Soul are just a few of the mic rippers on hand.
Tracklist
Freeway
A member of the Philly-based crew State Property led by rapper Beanie Sigel, Freeway was quickly scooped up by the Jay-Z/Damon Dash-run label Roc-A-Fella after his cohort Sigel hit the big time. Freeway's albums have very much been family affairs with guest shots from members of both Roc-A-Fella and State Property. However, relations between Sigel and Freeway have cooled somewhat since the duo united in the late 2000s, with Freeway going so far as to start his own Philly crew, Ice City, proving that in terms of both mic skills and entrepreneurial spirit he is a force to be reckoned with.
Brother Ali
While large white albino Muslims don't generally make for traditional pop music celebrities, that didn't stop Brother Ali (born Jason Newman) from pursuing hip-hop superstardom. The Minneapolis-based MC is a member of the Rhymesayers crew, and frequently works with other Rhymesayers stalwarts such as Slug and Ant. His often outspoken political lyrics, rejection of traditional notions of success and beauty, and fiercely independent approach haven't garnered him any favors with the mainstream. Still, Ali's amazing mic skills, infectious songwriting, and undeniable integrity have made him one of the underground's most intriguing figures. He toured with Ghostface Killah and the legendary Rakim on the 2007 Hip Hop Live! tour.
MF Doom
One half of the short-lived yet influential Long Island, NY rap duo K.M.D., MF Doom, then Zevlove X, was m.i.a. for several years following the tragic death of his brother (K.M.D. DJ Sub Roc) in 1993. Doom reemerged in the early 2000s as an MC possessed; virulently independent and underground, Doom, aka Daniel Dumile, released a plethora of albums under various noms de plume including Victor Vaughn, Metal Fingers, and King Geedorah and collaborated with Danger Mouse (as Danger Doom), and Mad Lib (as Mad Villain). A singular dedication to his art combined with a manic creativity marks MF Doom as one of the most important hip-hop artists of the form's third decade.
Young Buck
Nashville-based rapper Young Buck is perhaps best known for his status as Dirty South ambassador to New York City's G-Unit. Although Buck broke big with the assistance of 50 Cent and his crew, he cut his teeth with the boys of the famed "dirty dirty" label Cash Money. Following some all-too-common street scuffles, a brief association with Juvenile's UTP label, and an appearance on Fiddy's GET RICH OR DIE TRYIN', Young Buck released his G-Unit debut, STRAIGHT OUTTA CASHVILLE. Despite all the moving around and cross-scene allegiances, Young Buck is an avowed soldier in the Dirty South's rap army.
