Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy plays with both elegance and a sense of adventurousness. Generally associated with the avant garde, Lacy performed with Cecil Taylor, Roswell Rudd, Mal Waldron, and others, and was also well known for his solo performances.
THE FOREST & THE ZOO is a live album taken from a performance Lacy gave in Argentina in 1966 with his quartet, featuring drummer Louis T. Moholo, bassist Johnny Dyani, and trumpeter Enrico Rava. The set consists of two extended "mini-suites" built on distinctive themes. Like much of Lacy's work, these pieces are filled with the repetition of phrases, intense improvisation, and tight-knit group interplay.
