Joe Lovano

Big-toned tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano is a protean master of jazz. He knows bebop inside and out, and he's been inspired by free jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and contemporary big band jazz as well. With his big Sonny Rollins-sized tone, Lovano paid his dues with organ masters Dr. Lonnie Smith and Jack McDuff, and in the `70s big bands of Woody Herman and Mel Lewis as well as the cutting-edge combos of Charlie Haden, Paul Motian, and Carla Bley. Unlike many jazz musicians, Lovano has performed and recorded in a wide variety of contexts, from duos (with Hank Jones) to pianoless trios, as well as album tributes to vocal legends Frank Sinatra and Enrico Caruso.
