Black Metal enigma Velvet Cacoon play the kind of droning, drug-addled music that encourages the listener to nod off more than to headbang. The band is willfully deceptive in their interviews, and it's still not entirely settled who its members actually are. They've been accused of plagiarism and admitted to making up biographical details, pretended to have invented an instrument that doesn't exist, and flat-out proclaimed themselves a hoax, yet still have an active website and an album on the way. All the obscured details, however, don't change the fact that Velvet Cacoon creates a dense, ambient sonic blanket of rain-soaked wool with nettles stuck to it, one that wraps itself around a listener's head. Like albums from West Coast kindred spirits Xasthur and Wolves in the Throne Room, GENEVIEVE is a kind of metal that's more at home played in a foggy grove at midnight than in a rock club.
