While his name isn't exactly bandied about when it comes to fabulous sax players, King Curtis remains one of the greats. (It doesn't help that many old recordings don't list him as a performer.) In the 1950s and `60s, if there was a great record --rock, R&B, pop, blues, whatever--with a great gutsy-bluesy sax solo, chances are good it was Curtis. Eric Clapton, Aretha Franklin, John Lennon, Freddie King, Andy Williams--King Curtis played with them all. LIVE was recorded at a New York City club and finds Curtis (and guitar whiz Al Casey) engaging in the jazz side of his musical personality. There are touches of rhythm & blues, but this is indeed a jazz disc, and is highly recommended for fans of the great Curtis.
Tracklist
King Curtis
After cutting his teeth with Lionel Hampton's band, and lending his talents to various R&B sessions, sax player and band leader King Curtis hooked up with Atlantic Records, released his own excellent recordings, and became the leader of Aretha Franklin's backing band, producing and co-producing several of her finest albums. Playing buoyant, soulful instrumental versions of popular rock and soul tracks, Curtis was one of the few straight instrumentalists to find great success in the worlds of rock and R&B rather than jazz. One of the most influential sax players in rock history, Curtis was tragically murdered in New York City in 1971.
