Despite his moniker, pianist/singer Peter Chatman, better known as Memphis Slim, was a mainstay of vintage Chicago blues. His insistent, powerful piano appeared not only on his own classic 1940s/'50s recordings, but on sides by a host of other Chicago blues giants. BLUES BIOGRAPHY, while it lacks some of Slim's best-known tracks, nevertheless offers a healthy dose of the man's work. Listening to his pounding piano and soulful moan, it's easy to imagine oneself sitting in some 1950s Chicago juke joint, knocking back a whiskey while the king of piano blues does his thing.
