Shaggy

Pop crossover dancehall artist Shaggy (born Orville Richard Burrell in Jamaica) scored a huge hit with 1993's "Oh Carolina," a cover of the 1960s recording by the Folkes Brothers. After becoming a pop sensation in Britain, Shaggy hit the top of the U.S. charts with 1995's "Boombastic." His danceable combination of dancehall reggae and pop (minus the sexually explicit lyrics common to much dancehall music) made him mainstream material.

Janet Jackson

In the wake of Michael Jackson's monster success with THRILLER, most of his brothers and sisters tried their hands at launching similarly styled solo careers, with varying degrees of success. But the only one to become a major recording figure on her own (and achieve staying power) was Michael's youngest sister, Janet Jackson, who became one of the biggest and most successful recording artists of the 1980s/'90s thanks to such albums as CONTROL and THE VELVET ROPE. Following the somewhat lackluster sales of 2004's DAMITA JO album and her now-infamous "wardrobe malfunction" at that year's Super Bowl halftime show, Jackson kept a relatively low profile for a few years, but returned strong in 2006 with 20 Y.O.

Maxi Priest

Of Jamaican descent but born and raised in the U.K., Maxi Priest released his first album (YOU'RE SAFE) in 1985, but it wasn't until his 1988 self-titled breakthrough, with its reggae-inflected cover of Cat Stevens's "Wild World," that Maxi Priest gained significant attention. Fusing elements of R&B, pop, and reggae into a smooth, radio-ready concoction, Maxi Priest is regarded as one of the best latter-day practitioners of lovers rock. The artist released a number of albums throughout the '90s and into the 2000s. As a British reggae artist, Maxi Priest achieved the rare feat of landing a number-one slot on the American Billboard chart with his 1990 single, "Close to You."
