Jack DeJohnette

DeJohnette came on the scene in the '60s, playing with John Coltrane, Charles Lloyd, Thelonious Monk, Keith Jarrett, and others. In 1969 he played on Miles Davis 's BITCHES BREW. In the '70s he became virtually a session drummer for ECM Records, recording with Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie and others. With Abercrombie and Dave Holland, he formed the trio Gateway. In 1978 he formed New Directions, which involved Abercrombie and Lester Bowie, and in 1980 formed the acclaimed Special Edition. Subsequently, he joined Jarrett's long-running Standards Trio.

Michael Brecker

As one half of the famous Brecker Brothers, saxophonist Michael Brecker defined the sound of modern electric funk-jazz in the '70s. Since the 1980s, he has been one of the most in-demand session players, appearing on hundreds of recordings in both the jazz and pop fields, and his solo albums have received several Grammys. Brecker is known for his powerful tone, monstrous chops, and endless soloing stamina. He passed away from a leukemia-related illness in early 2006.
