Killing Joke: Jaz Coleman (vocals).
The studio follow-up to Killing Joke's fierce 2003 self-titled comeback album, HOSANNAS FROM THE BASEMENTS OF HELL finds the veteran U.K. industrial-rock ensemble returning to its early-1980s "primitive" sound, as clearly announced on the surging opener, "This Tribal Antidote," which showcases Geordie Walker's wire-tight guitar riffs. Although this record doesn't benefit from the rhythmic attack of Dave Grohl (Nirvana, Foo Fighters), a guest on the aforementioned outing, drummer Ben Calvert proves to be a worthy successor, as revealed on the pummeling title track, which also shines the spotlight on frontman Jaz Coleman, who mixes guttural screams with moments of subtle melody. While HOSANNAS may not win the group many new converts, it boldly reinforces Killing Joke's apocalyptic vision and sheer sonic power.
Tracklist
Killing Joke
Born out of the fires of England's first wave of post-punk, proto-industrial Killing Joke was always somehow apart from their contemporaries. Their music was harsher, their lyrics were angrier, and they had a penchant for heavy metal's guitar thunder. Those things never changed, and their sound never softened. Over the years, however, Killing Joke has incorporated dance and techno tropes, allowing them to vent at new and varied audiences. In 2003, the band's original lineup of Jaz Coleman, Geordie, and Youth reunited, backed by Raven and former Nirvana drummer/Foo Fighters leader Dave Grohl.
