While he was also a fine trumpeter, the late Thad Jones was one of the best composers for modern jazz orchestras in the 1960s and `70s, along with co-leading a celebrated big band with drummer Mel Lewis. Jones's tunes combined sophistication with warm, engaging melodies. After his untimely death, the Lewis organization kept the flame burning with regular performances; LIVE not only features classic Jones works but showcases contemporary jazz heavyweights such as Joe Lovano, Kenny Werner, and Earl McIntire.
