John Zorn

Native New Yorker John Zorn is one of the most important, influential figures in avant-garde jazz, particularly the downtown NYC improv scene. Zorn started out in the 1970s, forging a new template for jazz-based improvisation, drawing inspiration from both '60s free jazz and experimental New Music composition. Over the years, he's led numerous groups (Naked City, Masada, Painkiller, and others) and incorporated everything from Klezmer and classical to punk and heavy metal in his genre-defying music, working with the world's finest musicians along the way. Zorn's own label, Tzadik, has become a key source of inventive unconventional music by other artists, not to mention his own voluminous discography.

Jim O'Rourke

A multi-talented musician, producer, and artist, Jim O'Rourke is one of the most ubiquitous and important figures in the avant-garde music community of the late 20th century. In addition to collaborating with a host of experimental music's biggest names, O'Rourke has also worked with more mainstream acts such as Beth Orton and Wilco, and was an official member of Sonic Youth for several years in the early 2000s. O'Rourke's own music covers everything from sparse acoustic experiments and electronic compositions to orchestral chamber pop and guitar rock. A tireless and prolific creator, Jim O'Rourke has made varied and noteworthy contributions to experimental music .

Marc Ribot

The versatile, genre-hopping guitarist Marc Ribot was a fixture of New York's Downtown jazz scene for many years. Though Ribot is a well-known member of jazz's avant-garde, he's also a student of Haitian composer Frantz Casseus and one of contemporary jazz's most fervent champions of Latin music (Ribot's Los Cubanos Postizos is one of his most acclaimed ensembles). In addition to putting in time with the Lounge Lizards, the Jazz Passengers, and various John Zorn projects, Ribot frequently contributes his unique guitar stylings to various studio albums, most notably those of Tom Waits, with whom Ribot has been a long-time affiliate.
