Recorded at the landmark London venue in November 2000, LIVE AT THE ROYAL ALBERT HALL features the Who taking on some of their most timeless tunes to benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust. Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, and John Entwistle are joined by drummer Zak Starkey and keyboardist John "Rabbit" Bundrick for an energetic initial set of songs that draws most heavily from the lauded WHO'S NEXT album, including "Baba O'Riley" (with violinist Nigel Kennedy), "My Wife," and "Bargain." The band also rocks through the rare "Relay," a funky eight-minute song intended for the unfinished LIFEHOUSE project, and other classics such as "Pinball Wizard," "The Kids Are All right," and "Who Are You."
The latter half of the concert features guests aplenty. Starting out with a Townshend acoustic set, the famed Who songwriter is joined by Paul Weller for "So Sad About Us." Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder fronts the band for "I'm One" and sings along with Daltrey on "Getting in Tune." Other guests include Noel Gallagher of Oasis, Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics, and Canadian crooner Bryan Adams, rounding out this triumphant live release by one of the truly classic British rock bands.
Tracklist
Who
From the youthful arrogance of their early 1960s recordings to their ambitious rock operas and the more introspective FM rock staples of their mid-1970s albums, the Who raged like a rock & roll inferno. Pete Townshend's guitar fireworks and Keith Moon's larger-than-life drumming combined with the busy basslines of John Entwistle and Roger Daltrey's vocal roar to create one of rock's mightiest noises. The band reconvened numerous times following the hard-living Moon's death in 1978, and even continued to play for several years following the death of Entwistle in 2002.
Bryan Adams
Along with Mellencamp, Springsteen, and Petty, raspy-voiced Canadian singer/songwriter Bryan Adams embodied that brand of '80s music known as "heartland rock." His straightforward style connected with pop audiences, and his 1984 album RECKLESS sold more than five million copies. Adams's hot streak continued into the '90s, peaking in 1992 with the massive "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)," from the soundtrack to the film ROBIN HOOD. A late-'90s glam-rock makeover was largely unsuccessful, but he remains enormously popular worldwide. He's also branched out into dance and pop through collaborations with Spice Girl Mel C. and Chicane.
Paul Weller
Not content with fronting two of England's most influential bands (the Jam and the Style Council) in the '70s and '80s, Paul Weller began a solo career in the '90s. While the influences he'd drawn on in the past (soul, '60s mod) were still evident, they were blended with acid jazz and folk-rock, as Weller established a distinctive new voice as a singer-songwriter.
