Yardbirds
The Yardbirds started out in 1963 as part of the first wave of British blues groups, paying homage to their beloved Chicago blues. After the departure of original guitarist Eric Clapton in 1965, the group turned to a heavier, more psychedelic pop-rock sound. Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page both filled the guitar chair for the group, and after the Yardbirds disbanded, Page continued the heavy blues-rock concept with Led Zeppelin (as did Clapton and Beck, with Cream and the Jeff Beck Group, respectively). Consequently, the Yardbirds remain one of the most influential bands in rock history. Several times since 1992, various versions of the Yardbirds have reunited for concert tours.
Joe Satriani
Joe Satriani is one of the foremost "guitar shredders," a guitarist whose lightning speed virtuosity is matched by his vast theoretical knowledge and musical imagination. The New York six-string demon kicked around as a sideman for a long time before kicking off his solo career in the '80s. Since then he's garnered countless Grammy Nominations for Best Rock Instrumental, worked with shred supergroup G3 (including peers Steve Vai and Eric Johnson), and inspired legions of fiery guitarists.
Steve Vai
Steve Vai first came to public attention as Frank Zappa's "stunt guitarist" in the 1980s. Vai's incredible dexterity and musical acumen made him the thinking man's guitar hero. Striking out on his own, the fleet-fingered Vai released a series of solo albums that earned him a rabid following of guitar worshippers. Along the way, he did time as a sideman with David Lee Roth, replaced Yngwie Malmsteen in Alcatrazz, and formed shred-guitar supergroup G3 with fellow fretmasters Eric Johnson and Joe Satriani.
Jeff Beck
Along with Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, guitar legend Jeff Beck first made his mark with English blues-rockers The Yardbirds in the 1960s. And like the others, he gained greater popularity after he left the band. One of rock's great instrumentalists, Beck is also credited with giving Rod Stewart his musical start when Stewart fronted the Jeff Beck Group in the late '60s. Never one to sit still, Beck helped define hard rock in the late '60s before taking on jazz-rock fusion from a rock perspective in the '70s.
