Robyn Hitchcock: Robyn Hitchcock (vocals, guitar, harmonica, piano, bass guitar); Moris Tepper (acoustic guitar); Terry Edwards (horns, organ).
Recording information: Hanszek Studios; RMS Studios.
As an outtakes album, SHADOW CAT stands a cut above the average assembly of studio leftovers. That's not surprising coming from Robyn Hitchcock, however, whose sizable and variegated body of work is remarkably consistent. Hitchcock is joined here by guitarist Morris Tepper (formerly of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band) and Terry Edwards on organ, but this is a mostly acoustic set that finds Robyn front and center.
With the exception of the dark, moody cover of Hendrix's "The Wind Cries Mary," SHADOW CAT contains all Hitchcock originals. "For Debbie Reynolds" and "The Cat Walks Her Kind of Line" are among the many highlights in this batch of quirky, atmospheric, low-key folk-pop. Those who know the singer-songwriter from the film STOREFRONT HITCHCOCK will find much to recognize and appreciate on this intimate acoustic set.

Robyn Hitchcock

Robyn Hitchcock started out as the leader of late-1970s UK psychedelic revivalists the Soft Boys. After that band's disintegration at the turn of the decade, he became a solo artist, whose Bob Dylan-meets-Syd Barrett absurdist wordplay meshed perfectly with his post-Beatles pop melodicism. Sometimes on his own and sometimes with stalwart backup band the Egyptians, Hitchcock became a cult hero to the alternative/college-rock crowd in the '80s. Though some of his recordings were virtual one-man acoustic affairs and some featured full-blown pop production, Hitchcock never flagged in his devotion to his quirky muse, releasing great albums throughout the decades.
