Inti-Illimani were famous in Chile for their traditional folk music, but it was their outspoken political beliefs that led to their exile from their homeland. Relocating to Rome, the group (whose name, derived from the Aymaran Indian language of the Andes, means "Sun God") bolstered their artistic and political reputation by traveling the globe promoting art and freedom. In the 1988 Amnesty International Tour, they performed alongside Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Bruce Springsteen.
