Texan progressive-country troubadour Robert Earl Keen offers up a healthy serving of organic tunes on FARM FRESH ONIONS. The opening track, "Furnace Fan," serves as a charming tribute to Arizona that's buoyed by Marty Muse's pedal steel and Ian McLagan's organ. On this track, and throughout the album, Keen's vocal presence is immediately endearing as he sings songs filled with wanderlust and wry humor. Other highlights include "Out Here in the Middle" (with Shawn Colvin on harmony vocals), the raw title track, "Floppy Shoes" (with its Stevie Wonder/"Superstition"-like funk), the thoughtful "These Years," and the hushed short story of "Famous Words."
Tracklist
Robert Earl Keen
Texan singer-songwriter Robert Earl Keen is a revered member of the second generation of maverick country singers, a group which also includes the likes of Lyle Lovett and Steve Earle. The Houston native's style contains equal doses of T-for-Texas twang, folk wit, and Springsteen-style rock muscle. Keen has never cracked the charts in any significant way, but since the mid 1980s he has had a more than respectable career as a recording and touring artist, in addition to garnering the respect of his many esteemed peers.
