HAMILTON IRONWORKS was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Traditional Folk Album.
These are the last studio recordings made by folk legend John Hartford, who died in the spring of 2001. The set is imbued with the spirit of a man summing up his love of music and paying final tribute to his musical influences. The small ensemble includes Hartford's longtime cohort Bob Carlin on banjo as well as bass player Larry Perkins, mandolinist Mike Compton and guitarist Chris Sharp. Hartford fiddles and introduces the selections with grace and wit--everything you'd want from either a fine performer or an engaging teacher. What makes these performances so resilient and compelling is the casual ease Hartford displays, belying a lifetime of studying and internalizing this music. The album is warmly recorded with a clarity and presence that make the musicians sound like they could be standing right in your living room.
