Les Paul

A studio pioneer and arguably the most innovative musician of his generation, Waukesha, Wisconsin, native Les Paul created the solid-body guitar that bears his name. He was also a pioneer in the creation of multi-track recording and effects units. As a guitarist, he was an original jazz stylist who incorporated elements of blues, pop, and country. He started out recording with his own trio, but in the early 1950s, the records he made with his wife, Mary Ford, where she overdubbed several tracks of harmonized vocals, became huge pop hits. Enormously influential through both his musical and technological achievements, Paul continued to perform well into his nineties.

Joan Osborne

In 1995, it was difficult to escape the jangly ballad "One of Us," with its insanely catchy chorus, quasi-mystical lyrics, and soulful delivery. The song made Joan Osborne a star, but hardly an overnight sensation, as the Kentucky-born singer had been honing her chops in New York bars for years, singing the kind of bluesy, folky pop that would make her major label debut, RELISH, so universally beloved. Osborne toured with Lilith Faire in '97 and '98, and finally released a follow-up album in 2000. Although the album enjoyed some critical acclaim, it lacked an identifiable single and tanked on the charts. Osborne continued to release albums on indies thereafter, as well as joining the post-Jerry Garcia Grateful Dead for their wildly popular live shows.

Edgar Winter

Though he entered the public eye in tandem with his guitarist brother, Johnny Winter, keyboardist Edgar Winter distinguished himself with his seminal 1973 boogie-rock album, THEY ONLY COME OUT AT NIGHT, which spawned the AOR staple "Free Ride" and the rocking instrumental classic "Frankenstein." He has released a solid discography, as both a solo artist and in collaboration with Johnny and guitar hero Rick Derringer, and continues to record and perform to rabid fans. His devotion to Scientology inspired an anomalous 1989 concept album and many candid public statements about the controversial religion.
