In 1998, when Jerry Lee Lewis performed the Austin City Limits show from which this recording is taken, the Killer was already in his sixties, but he plays with the power and vitality of a 20-year-old. He sounds just as authoritative plowing his way through his '50s classics ("Great Balls of Fire," "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On") and his later country-oriented material ("39 and Holding"). He also breathes new life into tunes associated with his heroes (Hank Williams's "You Win Again") and his peers (Chuck Berry's "Sweet Little 16"). Rattling the piano keys like a man possessed and hollering like a Baptist preacher with his pants on fire, Lewis makes it plain why he is considered both one of rock & roll's founding fathers and one of the longest keepers of the flame.
Tracklist
Jerry Lee Lewis
Owing as much to 1950s wrestling bad guy Gorgeous George as he did to Elvis Presley, rock's original wildman didn't so much play rock & roll as he played Jerry Lee Lewis. A powerful honky-tonk pianist and singer, Lewis is that rare breed of star whose outsize ego is more than matched by his talent. He was among the first to show that the piano could challenge the guitar's rock & roll hegemony, and--along with Elvis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins--he formed the legendary mid-'50s stable of Sun Records, a group of performers that would forever change the face of popular music.
