While best known for playing in the cutting-edge bands of Ornette Coleman and leading his own politically charged Liberation Music Orchestra, bassist Charlie Haden also has a mellow side. Quartet West is Haden's outlet for straight-ahead bebop and chilled-out interpretations of jazz standards and 1940s/early '50s Hollywood movie music. This BEST OF collection is just that, a cross-section of tracks from Quartet West's four excellent Verve discs. With mainstays Ernie Watts (sax) and Alan Broadbent (piano, arrangements), Quartet West serves up classic jazz balladry ("Body and Soul") and original songs evoking starry-eyed romance and classic Warner Brothers films ("Here's Looking At You").
Tracklist
Charlie Haden
With the exception of Charles Mingus, Charlie Haden is perhaps the most important post-bop jazz bassist. His work with Ornette Coleman's original groundbreaking quartet helped establish the blueprint for free jazz, a blueprint that Haden himself augmented with his own Liberation Music Orchestra. Haden is as well known for his collaborations and work as a sideman--with Hampton Hawes, Pat Metheny, and Michael Brecker, among others--as he is for his own projects, and has been an inspiration for a host of diverse bass players in various genres. He is also the father of Petra, Tanya, Rachel, and Josh Haden, four talented musicians in their own right.
