The Everly Brothers: Don Everly, Phil Everly.
Recording information: 1957 - 1967.
This entry in Rhino Records' extra-value double CD best-of series showcases the Everly Brothers' talent and youthful energy, featuring a wide selection of their original hits, including "Bird Dog," "Wake Up, Little Susie," and "Crying in the Rain." The pair's late-1950s and early-'60s success, coming just before the advent of the British Invasion represented perhaps the last time rock & roll music could be seen as innocent, romantic, and devoid of the R&B-inspired eroticism first introduced by Elvis Presley and later by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Everly Brothers

These two brothers from Kentucky are the bridge between the assorted familial harmonizers of the country radio show era and the rock & roll of the '60s. Their sterling singing adapted well to the changing styles of four different decades. They were in on the first flush of the rock & roll era in the mid-'50s, and their mix of country, pop, and rock & roll provided some of the shining moments of the early '60s, a largely fallow time for pop music. In the late '60s/early '70s, their style was a natural fit for the burgeoning country-rock movement. After a mid-'70s breakup, the duo reunited in the '80s and continued performing together into the 21st century.
