Brian Eno

Pick almost any forward-looking trend in rock and you're likely to find that Eno blazed the trail. Beginning in the 1970s, Eno pioneered everything from art-rock to ambient music to sample-based electronica. His career began with Roxy Music, where he broke new ground with his synthesizer work. From there he went on to an illustrious solo career full of innovative electronic music as well as classic rock-based albums like ANOTHER GREEN WORLD. Along the way he found time to produce landmark albums by the likes of U2 and Talking Heads.

Robert Wyatt

Robert Wyatt first came to public attention in the 1960s as drummer/singer for Canterbury jazz-rock legends Soft Machine. A tragic accident cost him the use of his legs and consequently his drumming career, but he continued working as a solo artist from the 1970s into the 21st century. Wyatt's consistently stunning albums make use of his unique sweet-but-gritty voice, often-political lyrics, jazz-schooled harmonic sense, and artsong-like arrangements for a sound that's like nothing else in "pop" music.

David Gilmour

Since being brought abroad to cover for the increasingly unreliable Syd Barrett on guitar in the late 1960s, David Gilmour has been the musical foundation of Pink Floyd. Gilmour's work as a solo artist began with his 1978 self-titled debut, a record that didn't deviate much from the basic Floyd template, but came to symbolize the strife that would eventually lead to the band's break-up following 1983's THE FINAL CUT. Gilmour resumed his solo career with 1984's ABOUT FACE and continued to lead a revamped Pink Floyd into the new millennium. His solo career, however, remained on hold for 22 years until 2006's ON AN ISLAND.
