Rags-to-riches British tenor vocalist (and former welder) Russell Watson is a serious contender in the classical crossover sphere, a Mario Lanza or Andrea Bocelli for a new generation. Watson explores areas where popular opera, film music, rock, and mellow pop not only overlap but also enrich each other. He possesses a handsomely expressive voice combining impressive natural technique with nuance, warmth, and humor. The program is a truly "modern" one--Watson performs excerpts from operas by Puccini, Verdi, and Franck as well as songs by Queen, Ultravox (whose "Vienna" deserves operatic treatment), and (Italian pop singer) Zucchero.
Tracklist
Lulu
Something of a British parallel to Cher, Lulu rose to stardom at the tender age of 15 with her precocious rendition of "Shout." The single-named singer was a consistent chart presence in England throughout the '60s, scoring her biggest and best-known hit with the title song to the 1967 film TO SIR WITH LOVE. A marriage to Barry Gibb, numerous film and television roles, and successful collaborations with the likes of Elton John, Tina Turner, Bobby Womack, and Take That kept Lulu in the spotlight for decades. Like Cher, she is one of pop music's great survivors.
